As wonderful as Akismet is for catching comment spam, it’s even better to combine it with other tools.
When my blocked comment spams hit 40,000. I quietly added Bad Behavior and Comment Timeout to my toolset. It totally transformed things for me. It’s sad that you have to run so much software to get rid of spam comments, but that’s the way of the weblog world. I had considered turning comments off completely, particularly since I don’t get very many, but I didn’t really want to do that. Now I don’t have to.
