Behind Microsoft Deal, the Specter of a Nokia Android Phone

Microsoft’s recent purchase of Nokia was surprising to some and long overdue to others. Nokia was the largest maker of Windows Phone devices (80%) but there was an option in the contract to end it as of 2014. Meanwhile, Nokia was already working on an Android port to their hardware. Microsoft simply had no choice but to buy them. Now the only question that remains is whether they can make Windows Phone a from a distant third to a realistic competitor to iOS and Android.
