Hurricane Sandy

It’s still too soon to tell if Sandy is going to be a serious emergency in the Rochester area but it’s definitely got local authorities on alert. The Red Cross is already setting up shelters, local fire departments are on standby and the local amateur radio ARES/RACES group has been activated. The winds seem to be the biggest concern since they will make travel hazardous and lead to numerous power outages. My building, a high-rise in downtown, will be closed tomorrow and we’re being told to work from home. It’s a good time to stay home and stay safe. It’s simply not worth taking a chance, even here.

[Update] The area escaped with minor damage. Some areas near the lake without power but it’s not widespread. We lost post temporarily a few times but nothing long term. The weather is rainy and getting cooler but not bad considering. Stay safe wherever you are.
