What Happened to Diaspora, the ‘Facebook Killer’? It’s Complicated.

I think the best thing that can be said about Diaspora is that it attempted to do what’s right. The Internet was founded on the idea of decentralized communications and autonomy. Diaspora tried to bring that back but faced a competitor in Facebook that was just too big to overcome. If Google, with all of its resources, couldn’t unseat Facebook there was no way a small startup could. But just as with AT&T, even the biggest monopolies don’t last forever.
