App.net wants to do Twitter the right way

A project called App.net met its $500,000 funding goal. It’s an attempt to “do Twitter the right way” by focusing on users and developers rather than advertisers. It’s an enormous challenge, and it’s going to take more than that to build the level of infrastructure necessary to support a massive worldwide network like Twitter has now, but it’s certainly not impossible.
