Why labor sides with their own enemies

I’ve always wondered why people like my father, a staunch union member, was a Republican and not a Democrat. After all, the GOP is staunchly on the side of corporations and an enemy of organized labor. Author Jefferson Cowie’s new book, “Stayin’ Alive: The 1970s and the Last Days of the Working Class,” explains how New Deal policies began the estrangement between labor and the Democrats that continued into the 1970s and Nixon’s presidency.
