Author Jef­fer­son Cowie’s new book, “Stayin’ Alive: The 1970s and the Last Days of the Work­ing Class,” explains how New Deal poli­cies began the estrange­ment between labor and the Democ­rats that con­tin­ued into the 1970s and Nixon’s pres­i­dency.
