The city has decided not to loan money to the Amerks unless they replace their current management. Meanwhile, the ESL Sports Centre on the MCC property is millions of dollars in debt. Critics say as a result, maintenance is being ignored. MCC will inherit the building in 2033, assuming it’s still standing. ESL just happens to be the practice facility for the Amerks.
There’s a common thread to these two stories: Steve Donner. Donner is heavily involved with not only the Amerks but the Knighthawks and the Rhinos. He’s also behind the unnecessary Paetec Park soccer stadium. While some consider him a hero in terms of local sports, you can’t ignore the trail of “interesting” financial dealings that follow him wherever he goes.
