Toy recalls spur call for ouster

As much as we’d like to put a face on the problem, calling for the ouster of the head of CPSC isn’t going to solve anything. Besides, the problem isn’t the CPSC, it’s industry that has abandoned US factories and US workers in order to wholeheartedly embrace Chinese manufacturing. The low wages, thanks to near-slave labor conditions, combined with low or non-existent regulations (environmental, safety, raw materials) makes for an attractive package, but it’s becoming hard to overlook the associated problems.

Blogger wins defamation suit

South Carolina blogger Philip Smith won an important ruling in favor of bloggers’ rights when a court dismissed a defamation suit against him. Smith had posted critically about a company, BidZirk, which then took him to court and harassed him for over a year. While the ruling does not strictly equate bloggers with journalists, it does establish the bloggers share some of the same rights afforded to journalists in such situations.

A Tribute to Fup. Store Cat.

Fup, the bookstore cat at Powell’s technical bookstore has passed on at age 19. The Powell’s newsletter always had a Fup section at the end, it just won’t be the same without it.

Prelude

Prelude, originally uploaded by tommasz.

My office is opposite the wall where the vending machines are. Whenever someone’s snack fails to get out of the stack, I know it because I can hear and feel them rocking the machine. I try to make sure they realize that they’re not the only ones in the building but I missed the guy that bought this one.
