So close to a vacation day.

As I was getting out my car in the parking garage, I heard fire sirens. Not unusual for downtown, so I only paid minimal attention. But they came down Woodbury and turned onto Clinton, heading North. As I walked to my building, I realized they were stopping in front of it. Then I noticed people coming out of the building as the firefighters went in. Turns out there was a fire up on the top of the building and an evacuation had been called for those who were at work (it was before 7:30 AM).

Since there’s really no place to assemble, they move everyone across the street to Washington Square Park. It was nice weather today, so it wasn’t too bad though I wouldn’t want to be standing there in winter. Eventually, they allowed us to go to B&L’s lobby, which has a coffee stand, so at least we could sit down and enjoy some coffee while we waited. It was over an hour before they let us back in.

Considering it’s the Friday before Labor Day weekend, it was all I could do not to just head home. But I was the only one of my group in so I had to.

Not a good sign

It’s never a good sign when you arrive at work at the same time as the fire department does.

More news that isn’t news

Is it still a newspaper if the stories it reports aren’t news?

Do Not Use Until Further Notice!

Do Not Use Until Further Notice!, originally uploaded by tommasz.

The powers-that-be here at The Big Company have decided my floor will be one of the test sites for new Cisco VoIP phones. They installed them last night but we can’t use them yet.

They also managed to mess up my net wiring in the process but I figured that out and fixed it.

Biloxi, Mississippi, after Katrina

While most of Biloxi, Mississippi still hasn’t recovered from Katrina, you’ll be happy to know the resort and casino and doing just fine. [Salon.com link]

All I can say is that it’s been two years since Katrina and this is supposed to be the United States.
