Want to piss off the music indus­try dinosaurs? Release a CD in the Sun­day paper. Prince’s new CD, Planet Earth, will be included in the Mail Sun­day edi­tion in the UK this week­end. While this is not the first time a paper has given away a CD, it is cer­tainly the most controversial.

Prince has been using the net to dis­trib­ute music for years, and it’s clear there’s no love lost with the record com­pa­nies. I some­how doubt the threats are both­er­ing him in the least.

After read­ing Hans Reiser: Once a Linux Vision­ary, Now Accused of Mur­der, I’m still unable to make up my mind as to his actual guilt. Reiser hasn’t done much to make him­self look inno­cent, but that would seem to fit with his per­son­al­ity. I’d take a closer look at his for­mer “friend” Stur­geon, if I were inves­ti­gat­ing this. There’s some­thing wrong about him and I wouldn’t be sur­prised if he knew more than he’s will­ing to disclose.

It’s not even clear that his wife is dead, although there are cer­tainly signs point­ing in that direc­tion. Peo­ple have been con­victed of mur­der despite lack of a body, so there’s no guar­an­tee one way or the other once this gets to trial. All in all, this is prob­a­bly going to make a great “true crime” book someday.

Can any­one tell me what the “V”-shaped for­ma­tion in the river might be? It’s on the South side of the Broad St. bridge near the War Memorial.
