How to ruin BitTorrent
The BitTorrent P2P protocol is the de facto standard for sharing large files. It works by breaking up files into small pieces that individually downloadable. When you’re downloading, pieces can come from many different hosts, which can make downloads fairly fast. In addition, once you have some pieces of the file, you can begin uploading them to other BitTorrent users. It is accepted practice to upload as much (or more) than you download. But Wired is reporting that two new BitTorrent clients break that practice in oder to speed up downloads. If they catch on, it will likely cause BitTorrent to quickly fall out of favor.
