You have to won­der how “cor­rup­tion in the soft­ware” for the ferry’s propul­sion con­trol sys­tem could pos­si­bly occur. I’d expect such soft­ware to be in some type of non-volatile mem­ory (like Flash), sim­i­lar to the engine con­trol sys­tem in your car. Some cars can be upgraded by ser­vice peo­ple, oth­ers require a com­puter swap. Either way, it takes some­thing sig­nif­i­cant to change it. But here we have a multi-million dol­lar ship that seems to have had a change with­out an obvi­ous cause. Not encouraging.
