Stephen Wolfram, of Mathematica fame has written a new book, A New Kind of Science after years of seclusion (review here). He’s discovered the power of cellular automata (as in the game of Life) and thinks it’s key to understanding reality. Wolfram is a genius, in the old fashioned, scary sense, and nothing he says about mathematics can be dismissed lightly.

You’ll note, though, the review link is full of negative comments. It’s far from a foregone conclusion that Wolfram is right, and his lack of peer review is troubling for a work of this scope.
